For the first time in US history, seven species of Hawaiian yellow-faced bees have officially been added to the US endangered species list, according to National Geographic. It’s a sad fact that the insects responsible for pollinating beautiful flowers, fruits, nuts and other various resources have the potential to go extinct. In order to save our resources, the bees need to be protected.

Without bees, coffee would become expensive and rare and almonds might not exist, according to iflscience.com. Bees are responsible for pollinating 70 percent of the world’s fruits, vegetables, nut and seeds.

Our eating habits would change drastically if bees no longer existed. A chain reaction would occur leading to the inevitability of limited resources due to the extinct species of bees. For example, bees pollinate almonds and livestock eat food made from almonds, so if the bees went extinct, almonds would also go extinct, and the quantity of livestock would decrease, causing the production of eggs, milk and cheese to also decrease, according to beeaware.org.

Humans and animals wouldn’t starve or die out, but resources would deplete. Livestock would decrease because the food that the animals eat are made with resources that are pollinated by bees.

In order to save the bees, society needs to say no to harmful pesticides that kill bees and plant various flowers, fruits and vegetables that bees can help pollinate. To get even more involved with the ‘Save the Bees’ movement, sign petitions and contact your State Representative.

Saving the bees is imperative to our society. Without them, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds would be rare and expensive.
