Everyday animals suffer from dehydration, hunger, abuse and loss of love. Working to help change this statistic there are foster parents. Rebecca Prebble has fostered two dogs in the last two months and has been enjoying the process.

Fostering animals might not seem easy but it’s actually quite simple.

“We are on an email list of foster parents and what happens is Anderson Animal Shelter transports dogs from other states to their location in South Elgin. When they know they are receiving a van full of animals we get an email and it will list all the dogs ready to be fostered. If there is a dog that looks interesting we can claim it,” Prebble said.

Most companies such as Anderson Animal Shelter will supply any materials the pets need.

“They provide all the food, medicine and supplies. Our current foster dog Cassie likes her food better when we mix eggs in with it, but that’s not something I am required to do at all,” Prebble said.

Already having a dog and adding to the family was a decision Prebble were unsure about.

“My husband is from England and we go there in the summers and having someone look after two dogs is hard. It was a mutual decision, he was on board because it wasn’t as big of a commitment,” Prebble said. While fostering an animal it can be complicated. Such as the animal becoming sick, vicious or shy.

“I like Anderson because they don’t get mad if I say this dogs not working out, then we get the opportunity to take it back and bring a new one home,” Prebble said.

Unfortunately, fostering animals means that they are not yours forever. Once there is room in a store, the foster parents will bring the animal there. They will stay for a couple days and this is how they become adopted. Normally if the animal isn’t in a store, then it could be found online. In some cases the the foster family will adopt the animal.

Fostering one dog is a small contribution to this issue and will impact the parents and animal’s life forever.
