Winter assembly warms the hearts of many despite cold weather

The unmistakable noise of excited conversation filled the East Gym last Friday as students and staff entered for the annual winter assembly. The assembly was filled with fast-paced games and a variety of action.

It kicked off with a short but energetic performance by both the cheer team and the pom squad. The cheer team later enthusiastically performed their state competition routine in front of the crowd.

Seniors Aimee Frost and Julia Lemp from the Kaneland Cares Fund opened the announcements by awarding teacher Nora Tomasik with $250 to help her in her journey of adopting a child. Key Club also gave her the $450 they had raised.

A game of musical chairs between the Mr. Kaneland candidates quickly ensued resulting in a win for junior Michael Petrik. The candidates entertained by anxiously sitting down at any slight pause in the music and throwing down over the remaining chairs, all of them eager for the win.

A major highlight was Mr. Parillo and Mr. Larsen getting pied by two students. While Mr. Larsen accepted his pie-splattered destiny, Mr. Parillo ducked and ran but was eventually caught and faced his fate by getting a pie slammed onto his head.

“I thought it was pretty funny when Parillo ran away” junior Kyle Kanady said.

Freshman Spencer Matias’ favorite part however was the game of class karaoke that closed the assembly. All classes competed to sing a popular song the loudest and the longest.

“We got to be loud, and I like being loud,” Matias said.
