1. Check out the school ahead of time
Athletic Director Leigh Jaffke recommends first finding out whether the university has a program in the subject the athlete plans on majoring in. Beyond that, she said, an athlete should see if the school feels like the right fit. Once an athlete feels at home at a school, the decision of where to go is clear.
2. Market, market, market
First and foremost, get cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. To do so, contact Counselor Andrew Frankling, then work with KHS coaches, Jaffke said. For athletes who have not been contacted by coaches, those who are interested in a particular school should contact the coach, Jaffke said. Send the coach game films, stats, grades, letters of recommendation, a letter of interest, and anything else that shows skill. “Sell youself,” Jaffke advised.”Another good way to get recruited is to see if the college has any camps you can attend,” Jaffke added.
4. Have an open mind
Go in with an open mindset, Jaffke advised. Athletes should take in as much information as they can. Try to see the town and area surrounding the school, and try to meet team members. A visit with them, without the coaches around, allows for more honest and open communication with them.
