Jill Maras’ dream of creating the Knights’ Armory is finally a reality.
The program, which is one of the newest editions to Kaneland, is designed to offer individualized assistance to students who need it, as well as a quiet place to concentrate on tests or projects.
“[The program started] this year, but we dreamt about it last year. It took a lot of time to get ready for it last year,” Maras, Kaneland’s special education director, said.
Students can use the Armory as often as they need to. It can also be used during STEN to take tests, or it can be taken as a class. Classes usually have a maximum of 15 students, but students may come and go as they please throughout the day. There will always be one of the two teachers who run the program in the room to offer students assistance.
“This benefits the Kaneland students because general teachers are more supported and students could benefit from that,” Maras said. “It can also be an extra set of hands in a classroom, or teachers may send students down to the Armory for more [individualized] help.”
