Republican leaders in the House voted to repeal the new health care act on Jan. 19, and the bill-officially named the “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law”-has gone to the Senate, where 44 Republican Senators are supporting it.
While the repeal passed the Republican-controlled House, it is doubtful that the Democratic-controlled Senate will pass the legislation or that President Obama would sign the repeal into law. The repeal is symbolic, Social Studies teacher Javier Martinez said.
Republicans never expected the health care act to be repealed, Martinez said; the goal is to please constituents and make a point. The subject sparked debate. Sophomore Gabriella Aguirre said that people should be given health care because everyone pays taxes, while sophomore Kaitlyn Wendling disagreed, saying it takes away people’s freedom to choose.
“I don’t know how it will affect individual families, but health care costs are going to be going up. Health care costs are going up, and then taxes will go up,” Martinez said.
