Gym uniform? Check. Running shoes? Check. Heart rate monitor? Check.
Kaneland students are now strapping on heart rate monitors in all P.E. classes. The monitors, which became mandatory this year, and used so students can check their heart rate.
“This is the first year all P.E. classes are using and requiring health monitors,” health teacher Cindy Miller said.
While Kaneland does provide the watch and monitor, students are required to buy an adjustable strap, which holds the monitor to the student’s body. The strap costs $7. The monitor helps students and P.E. teachers to see whether a student’s exertion in class is enough to keep them in the “fitness zone” created by the school.
Students get graded on whether they stay in the fitness zone for the right amount of time. Several students do not agree with the new requirement to wear a heart rate monitor.
“They seem kind of pointless. Sometimes they don’t work right,” freshman Megan Holloman said.
“I don’t really like the health monitors. They’re really annoying and if you don’t tighten them, they fall off,” freshman Alex Gil said.
