What do the movies “Cars 2,” “Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” have in common? They’re all sequels.
Those aren’t the only movies that weren’t as fresh as audiences were expecting over the summer. Many movies have lately been consisting of remakes, sequels, prequels, books and comics, but nothing excitedly new. So is Hollywood out of ideas or is this a new trend?
Sure, the movies all brought up a lot of chatter from the world, especially the finale of “Harry Potter,” but where were all the original ideas in the rush? They were under all the hustle-and-bust of the sequels to the former popular titles. Many of the movies that were new weren’t much to talk about, like “Mars Needs Moms,” “Priest” and “Something Borrowed,” which, between a “fresh” and a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomato-meter, all received a “rotten.”
Although there were other original films that had good ratings like “Bridesmaids,” which hit the box office with $169,106,725, they still weren’t at the top of the list on popularity compared to films like “The Hangover 2,” which reached $254,464,305.
Even the upcoming films that people are excited about are also based off past plots, such as “Puss in Boots,” “Twilight: Breaking Dawn,” “The Thing” and “Johnny English Reborn.”
Is Hollywood out of ideas? No. At most, they are just following what audiences around the world are asking for: bring back the movies we know and love.
There are a few original titles coming up as well that seem to be promising, like “In Time,” so it seems more to be a new trend emerging for the century that most people seem to enjoy, especially book fans.
There are many plans to turn popular books into movies as well, probably in hopes that they will be hits in the box office like the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” franchises were in the previous years.
