Based on the best-selling trilogy written by Veronica Roth, “Divergent” is centered around the first book. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors in the futuristic city of Chicago are placed into five factions, or groups. These five fractions each represent something different: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intelligent.

Every year, all sixteen-year-olds take an aptitude test that will reveal which faction they’re best suited for. The next day, Choosing Day, the teenagers are given the opportunity to stay within their faction or transfer to a different one.

The main character, sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior, grows up in Abnegation with her two parents and her brother, Caleb. Played by Shailene Woodley, Beatrice, feels as if she doesn’t fit into Abnegation.

Results of her aptitude test reveal that she is a “Divergent.” Divergents are rare but pose a threat to the faction-based society because they have skills that fall under more than one faction.

On Choosing Day, Beatrice, or “Tris,” decides to transfer to Dauntless. The teenagers that chose this faction are faced with an initiation process. This process is very difficult and Tris quickly learns that this faction has no tolerence for cowards. Her initiation instructor, Four, teaches the initiates how to fight and become fearless. Four is played by the heartthrob Theo James, and viewers quickly see the developing chemistry Four and Tris have. Romance seems to play a part in this film as well.

Tris is accompanied by her two friends, Will and Christina. As initiation continues, Tris learns more about the danger she faces if Erudite’s leader, Jeanine Matthews, discovers she is Divergent.

The director, Neil Burger, does a great job keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Even if the person hasn’t read the novels before, the movie includes all the essential details to interest all types of audience members.

Woodley acts brilliantly and the cast in general are beyond talented. Among the cast members are Kate Winslet, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q and Miles Teller. Those are just several of the fantastic cast members.

The movie does an amazing job of representing Roth’s novel. It sticks to the plot of the story but still manages to create a new experience for people who have already read this series. This could be the new Hunger Games phenomenon.
