Monster, Rockstar and Red Bull are all common energy drinks that teens like to use to keep themselves awake. But what effects are they having on the body?

“It gives me more energy to get through the day,” senior Tyler Keenum said.

Most students after drinking some form of caffine have the energy they need for a few hours, then they crash. The body uses the energy gained from the drink in a short period of time, but once the energy is used up the body starts to realize that it no longer has the energy to function normally. It’s hard to pinpoint a safe dose of energy drink because it varies from person to person according to a that individual’s tolerance. This is just one way energy drinks and coffee can affect you.

Many students just suffer from the crash; but are there long-term effects that can harm your body in the future?  Between 500 milligrams to 1000 milligrams in a 24-hour period will probably result in some of the side effects below.

“[It] keeps me awake, but I don’t suffer the crash most people do.” senior Nicholas Yankula said.

Energy drinks are more harmful than one might think. These drinks can cause palpitations, tremors, agitation, chest pain, dizziness, insomnia, and headaches.

With the most common ingredient in energy drinks being caffeine most would know the side effects of it. Caffeine can be disguised as guarana, green tea extract and coffee extract. So, be aware of this when reading energy drink labels.

“It all depends on when you drink it. Like if you drink it in the morning you’ll be awake and jitters for maybe a class or two. But you’ll end up crashing later,” senior Heather Shelton said.
