Fall Out Boy returns with Save Rock & Roll

Fall+Out+Boy+returns+with+Save+Rock+%26+Roll

By Jack Coyle, Reporter

By far, the most exciting moment of the year musically, was the announcement that Fall Out Boy was back after a four year hiatus. Their fifth album “Save Rock and Roll” secretly recorded in 2012 was announced on February 4, 2013. The band originating from Chicago is famous for their punk sound and emotional lyrics. This set them in a sub-genre called pop-punk.

Many Kaneland students who grew up listening to Fall Out Boy could not wait to hear what songs they had prepared for this album, The wait wasn’t long because on February 4, they released My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark(Light Em Up). The video features rapper 2 Chainz throwing albums into a fire, displaying the metaphor that current music is ruining rock and roll, they continue the song with a nice chorus and heavier sound than expected, Patrick Stump returns with a more matured voice and a strong instrumental presence.

Another song that was leaked “The Phoenix” was released on March 24, as another promotional single. This song is a mix of heavy verses and a catchy chorus that brings back memories From Under the Cork Tree, This song sounded a lot more like the old Fall Out Boy than My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark(Light Em Up).

The biggest mystery about this experience is that throughout the process and secret recording, Fall Out Boy decided to leak their own album early. In a day and age where the album would probably leak because of a fluke, Fall Out Boy decided to take fate into their own hands and leak it early, this is really special as a fan because it shows that FOB isn’t too concerned about money and just wants an enjoyable album for their fans.

After listening to the album, it is obvious that this album met critics extremely high standards held for Fall Out Boy, The expectations were not met at first because their first singles were not what was expected. The song titled Save Rock and Roll, featuring Elton John, was by far a fan favorite, it had the emotional lyrics fans were hoping for and kept the punk sound that they had stuck to for years. The album as a whole comes together perfectly. It is available on iTunes.
