Enter a world of spells with “Beautiful Creatures”

By Jaemee Cordero, Editor

A trend for popular teen books have been to move them to the big screen.  People have been introduced to vampires, werewolves, angels, even zombies.  Now author Kami Garcia has brought witches to the fad.

Based on the young adult romance novel, “Beautiful Creatures” revolves around Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), an ambitious boy who is anxious to move out of his small town.  When mysterious Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert) moves in, everyone keeps a distance, knowing the dark rumors looming over her family name.  Ethan decides to be the cliché boy who ignores the rumors and gets to know the misunderstood new kid.

But Lena isn’t denying any of the gossip that the small town has thrown her way.

She admits to Ethan that she is a Caster, known to mortals as a witch, and her soul will be chosen for either Light or Dark – good or evil – when she turns 16.  The problem is Lena is a uniquely powerful Caster.  If her fate chooses Dark, she could end humans as a species and Casters could finally reign free.  Even if she’s afraid of the very idea, she doesn’t know what she is on the inside and what her true-self will choose.  Now Ethan has walked into her life, her family fearing that he will only threaten her further into a grim destiny.

“Beautiful Creatures” was an enchanting film.  It wasn’t just a dreamy romance.  It was also a stunning fantasy that brought viewers into a world of spells and magic.

Visual effects made viewers feel like they were there and experiencing the magic.  It went from Casters making plants bloom to making it snow on a warm sunny day.

There were also very diverse characters that were brought to life from the original book.  For instance, it was impressive to watch Emma Thompson (“Nanny McPhee”) alternate frequently and quickly between two different personalities as she played the possessed Mrs. Lincoln.

The film really dug into a common question that most teens ask themselves:  Who are they really on the inside?  Lena ponders and dismays it during the movie and makes audiences wonder the same thing.  It makes them think about what their own inner-selves would choose if they were in Lena’s shoes.

Of course, most fans of paper-to-film projects, like the “Twilight” or “Harry Potter” franchises, agree that the book is better.  However, despite this, this movie still didn’t fail to entertain its fans.

“Beautiful Creatures” is rated PG-13 and is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Check out the new “Chick-fil-A”

By Tatiana LeeEditor

Looking for a place with a great atmosphere and fresh smells to go along with it? Ever heard of a restaurant great for hanging with friends or family after shopping along Randall Road? Give “Chick-fil-A” a try.  Anyone may just want to keep going back.

Chick-fil-A opened in Batavia Feb. 17. Many excited locals stood in line to get the free rewards and gifts that came with standing in the early hours of that Thursday morning. Signs were hung in the days before, counting down the days until it would be opened to the community.

Now in full swing, the seats seem to always be filled with happy customers as the drive-thru is always long, and the parking lot almost always short on spaces.

The inviting smells it makes customers want to know what’s cooking in the kitchen. A big part of the restaurant’s culture is the polite mannerisms displayed by employees.

Allergies to certain ingredients is a common issue.  People can check out Chick-fil-A’s website for all the ingredients in each dish. They also have a section for people with diabetes and or glucose problems. They will help you find the best food to eat with your condition.

The title “fast food” may sometimes have a bad name, but here people will find nothing less but a great tasting snack or meal at this fine restaurant.

Some may say that the drive-thru can be a rather stressful experience trying to handle all the food being handed in between the employee and the customer.  There’s countless times when a drink will unfortunately spill after purchase. Well, be sure to know that if it happens, “Chick-fil-A” is there to help. The drink will be replaced with a full new one, with extra napkins on the way.

Overall, the eatery was a pleasant experience. The food was filling and delicious. The mood of the environment was extremely welcoming. “Chick-fil-A” is very family-oriented, especially with its eager employees.  Anyone of any age can enjoy a meal there.

The fast food chicken-themed restaurant is located at 185 N. Randall Road.  It is closed on Sunday, but is open Monday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and also on Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
