Having breakfast served at bowl of cheerios Kaneland saves time no more

Last year at Kaneland High School, breakfast was offered in the cafeteria.

That’s not the case this year. In the morning the lunchroom is closed and we are not allowed to purchase breakfast in the mornings anymore at school.

“It was easier in the mornings when I could buy breakfast,” junior Lesly Chavez said.

In the mornings students may run out of time.

Many students do after school activities or sports. They get home from school then they have homework to do and some teens do have jobs that they have to work to so causing them to skip meals and be tired and want to sleep in later. Getting up just in enough time to catch the bus.

Teens try to sleep in as late as possible in the mornings and sometimes in order to sleep in later skipping breakfast is one way to do so.

With the schedule change students no longer have STEP in the mornings, which was a perfect time to go buy breakfast.

“I liked being able to buy breakfast at school, because sometimes at home I don’t have enough time” junior Cynthia Delao said.

Studies do show breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

According to kids health.org “breakfast improves academic performance. Teenagers that skip breakfast may be sluggish, less attentive, and have less energy.”

“Having breakfast served at school helped me save time in the mornings. It was one less thing I had to do,” Chavez said.

Studies show that children and teens that eat a good healthy breakfast do better in school then children and teens that don’t eat breakfast.

Breakfast provides energy needed to start the day off right.

Approximately eight to twelve percent of all school-aged kids skip breakfast, by the time kids enter adolescence age as many as 20 to 30 percent of them completely given up the morning meal.

Not having breakfast means you have gone hours without sleeping and people need to refuel your body after sleeping.

“Having breakfast served at school was convenient and made mornings easier,” Delao said.

Not having breakfast in the mornings can make it harder to focus in their moning classes.

Breakfast is what starts the day off right, but students no longer have the privilege to purchase breakfast at school.

“If breakfast could be purchased at school more teens would eat the most important meal,”  Chavez said.

“I liked my mini pancakes in the mornng, I looked forward to eating them in the mornings,” Chavez said.
