North Korea has been known to not be subtle with its propaganda, often insulting U.S directly with words such as “Death to U.S. imperialists, our sworn enemy!” and “When provoking a war of aggression, we will hit back, beginning with the U.S.” In the most recent propaganda video, New York was in flames.
With an instrumental version of We are the World heard in the background, the propaganda takes place aboard the rocket “Unha-9”, looking down onto Earth. It shows both North and South Korea celebrating their unification with many flags waving across the peninsula, while New York is on fire.
“I see black smoke billowing somewhere in America,” says the translation, according to New York Times. “It appears that the headquarters of evil, which has had a habit of using force and unilateralism and committing wars of aggression, is going up in flames it itself has ignited.”
The video could be seen on youtube until it was pulled due to a complaint from the maker of “Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare,” stating that Korea used a scene from the video game without permission.
In addition, North Korea recently confirmed a successful nuclear test on Feb. 12, pressuring the U.S even more.
“North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs constitute a threat to U.S. national security and to international peace and security,” Pres. Barack Obama said soon after the test, “The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and steadfast in our defense commitments to allies in the region.”
North Korea has launched two tests before in 2006 and 2009. However, in 2005, North Korea signed a commitment on Sept. 19 to end all nuclear developments.
With the more nuclear tests launched, North Korea potentially creates even more isolation.
“Far from achieving its stated goal of becoming a strong and prosperous nation, North Korea has instead increasingly isolated and impoverished its people through its ill-advised pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery,” Obama said.
Obama will be working with UN members and other allies to pursue action against North Korea.
