School changes for the better

“The Vision 2014 Plan, as we talk about or use the term 2014, it was a three year strategic plan that was put in place a year ago,” Schuler said in a State of the District presentation on Oct. 15. “What’s driving that 2014 plan is the clear goal that we have for all kids to move to higher levels of college, career, and community readiness.”

One clear change that was part of the plan was the transition to the eight period day at the high school.

“This [is] our first year when we are on an eight period day allowing students to have more contact with content areas for longer periods of time,” Director of Educational Services K-5 Dr. Sarah Mumm said.

Another reason for celebration at the high school is that enrollment in Advanced Placement classes has doubled in the past year. There has also been a significant increase in PLAN and EXPLORE scores.

“We were excited to see the percent increase in the students that were meeting the college readiness standards,” Mumm said.

The State of Illinois recently implemented Common Core State Standards, a program that will ensure that Illinois schools are helping prepare students for success in college and the workforce. Kaneland has adopted this program and is completely aligned in language arts and math to the Common Core State Standards.

Yet another change took place at Kaneland High School this year when the College and Career Center opened. Administration would also like to begin a K-12 summer learning program.

“What we plan on doing is being able to offer some enrichment activities along with providing some skill reinforcement and some credit recovery options. We’re looking forward to that,” Director of Special Services Fran Eggleston said.

When it comes to money, the district has had a balanced budget for the past two years.

“A lot of that hard work is done in our buildings with our building administrators working side by side and very collaboratively with our staff. I would like to definitely acknowledge their hard work,” Assistant Superintendent for Business Julie Ann Fuchs said.

“Behind our mission statement, we know what we’re really about as an educational institution is the goals that our kids have. The goals they have for themselves and the goals [parents] have for them,” Schuler said.

“We have had a great year so far, with all the changes it has been good,” Dr. Schuler said.
