With Black Friday nearing, so does booming business

There will be many with numerous shopping bags on Black Friday
There will be many with numerous shopping bags on Black Friday

BY MURPHY GARCIA, Editor

The day that everyone has been waiting for is almost here! Some may say that the best shopping day of the year is, of course, the monsterly Black Friday, but is that really the truth?

In the early 1960s, Black Friday was originally constructed to get rid of leftovers and start out the sales for the Christmas season. The name originated through business going from red to black, and black meant profit. Today, Black Friday is a competition to see who can get to the singing Ariel doll or the 76-inch flat screen HD television within the first ten minutes of opening, because of the rock bottom prices. It has become so extreme that stores are opening before midnight now.

From personal experience, Black Friday is a good day to get creative gifts for the family because of the extreme sales. It’s not like an ordinary shopping day due to the fact that most people have a plan of attack and only venture out to get what they were destined to. That is one of the amusing, yet dangerous things about this particular shopping day. Shoppers get so revved up about one specific item that they get in other people’s faces and mow everybody down. It’s interesting how one thing can demolish the sense of many, making them inhumane.

Last year, many stores opened at midnight. American Eagle Outfitters in Geneva Commons sold over $1,000 of merchandise within the first hour of opening. I predict that the number of purchases will be expanding, and stores will open even earlier this Black Friday.  As always, the electronics are going to be a big hit. This year features the iPad mini, the iPhone 5 and videogames such as Madden 13. Technological products are always the first ones to go. According to GottaDeal.com, Black Friday deals will be advertised more through social networking sites like Facebook. It also says that because Black Friday is on such an early date this time around, there will be more crazy Christmas sales taking place afterwards. So, with supreme sales to come, businesses will be booming this Black Friday.
