Robin Urich and daughters senior Amber and freshman Rachel pick out bowls for the charity dinner on May 4.
A delicious aroma filled the air in the cafeteria as teachers, parents and students alike gathered to share stories and eat soup.
On May 4 from 5-7 p.m., art students from Emily VanDelinder-Birchfield’s Ceramics II class hosted a dinner for charity.
The class’s work on ceramic bowls for the dinner was mandatory, and each person that attended got to pick their own bowl to take home.
“I think [the bowls] are all very clever, very creative, and I think it’s a great idea that they had to raise money for the food pantry,” Robin Urich, who attended the dinner, said.
Payment for the dinner came in donations: each attendee was asked to pay $8 or more per bowl of soup, but VanDelinder said that the actual price varied depending on what everyone could pay.
“We’re asking for a donation so whatever you can pay,” she said. “All the money goes to charity, so we take what we can get.”
Some art club members also participated in Kaneland Empty Bowls 2012, which also has a Facebook group. This group, mentioned on posters located throughout the school, detailed the dinner with times, dates and other information.
According to senior Allisan Tate, a student in VanDelinder’s Ceramics II class, each student was asked to make 20 ceramic bowls.
“It was fun, but it was a lot of work,” she said. “All the money goes to charity to help the people that need help.”
The bowls were made for the Between Friends food pantry in Sugar Grove.
“It was really cool to see the bowls all stacked up on the shelves when everyone was done,” Tate said.
