“Flipped” classrooms proposed at last board meeting
June 1, 2012
Kris Weiss, Harter Middle School’s assistant principal, proposed “flipping” the classroom as a way to improve instruction at the May 14 board meeting.
In her presentation, Weiss discussed how Kaneland schools are trying to incorporate more technology into their everyday teaching routines. She discussed the possibility of switching to a “flipped” classroom, which is when students watch a presentation at home of their teacher giving a lesson, then instead of doing their homework at home, they actually work on it during school where they can ask questions to further their understanding of the topic.
“This gives students more opportunities to ask questions and get help instead of just guessing on it at home,” Weiss said.
Some teachers at Kaneland are already using this technique and think it will be useful next year with the shorter periods.
Awards recognizing 25 Years of Service were also given to teachers Tom Huels and Jim McKnight.
