Volunteering in a local community is a good way to give back, but most high school students don’t know where to begin or where to go. Sophomore Luke Conway is one of those students.
“I don’t volunteer because it was never brought to my attention, and I plan on doing it,” Conway said.
There are many different places that need help to keep their organization running. While places like “Feed my Starving Children” are a well-known and respected organizations, there are other places that are “under the radar” in need of just as much help. Sophomore Jordan Thelander is one that volunteers on a regular basis.
“ [I volunteer at the] Sugar Grove Food pantry and my church, St. Galls in Elburn,” Thelander said.
On the Daily announcements there have been multiple occasions suggested to go and volunteer at that need the help such as Delnor hospital and the elementary school, so this where students can get information to start volunteering. Local churches and food banks always need help, not only when it is a holiday but all year around. Along with Thelander, senior Steven Krafft is another Kaneland student that helps out at the Sugar Grove Pantry.
“I volunteer every week because I really like to help people out because it makes me feel good,” Krafft said, “ I don’t take hours because I don’t care about the recognition.”
Volunteering is all about giving back to the community and to those who are less fortunate, but with G.I.V.E. hours it will also look good on a resume when applying to future jobs and college. Senior Veronica Seawall is one student who is using volunteering to her advantage for her future job.
“[I] volunteer at Brookfield zoo because I want to pursue a career as a zookeeper” seawall said.
Kaneland also has a the G.I.V.E. program; Generosity Involves Volunteer Effort. The effect of this program is to get students to give back to the community. When students do volunteer all they have to do is fill out a sheet saying that volunteered with the sponsor’s signature and turn it back into the school to receive the G.I.V.E. hours.
“I love to give back by helping others,” junior Madeline Cole said, “I think it’s very important and it helps someone realize how fortunate they are. Volunteering humbles people, by being a servant to those in need.”
