Teen Read Week is a national program hosted by the American Library Association the third week of October each year.

“The purpose of Teen Read Week is for recreation. It’s to help the students find something they would like to read,” school librarian, Lorna Code, said.

The program has been around since 1998 and since then, thousands of schools across the country have participated. This year it’s from October 18th-24th.

Teachers help encourage students to read for enjoyment. Cindy Miller, Patrick Carter, and Victoria Davis were some of the teachers that read during the week.

Davis believes that Kaneland value’s reading. She also believes that teens are still reading, but shorter pieces of writing such as news articles and tweets on their phones.

“Reading is very important to me,” Davis said, “it’s very relaxing for me. I feel like I’m escaping to a new world.”
