Remembering those who served; Healing Field

By: Emma Wallace, Editor

Memorial weekend won’t only be a time of relaxation here at Kaneland High School. Honoring those who serve our country, KHS will proudly be assembling a “Healing Field” on the grounds of the school.

“What inspired this event was mainly patriotism. We want to thank service men and service women and all of our veterans in the community for sacrificing and providing freedom for our great country,” project chair Rudy Keller said.

The event will include numerous flags purchased by families or individuals that want to honor their hero. Personal sponsorship flags will cost $35 per flag, small business sponsorship will be $500 for five flags and corporate sponsorship will cost $1,000 for ten flags. All of the proceeds from this event will support local veteran’s programs in the community.

“I expect at least 1,000 flags and more than 1,000 people to be a part of the event,” Keller said.

In addition the the flags, Keller has set up other areas of the field with special features.

“We have also set up a brick paver entrance with a reflecting pool and glass prisoner of war/missing in action case to honor those who are not with us,” Keller said.

There will also be large flag poles representing each branch of military service, the Illinois state flag and the American flag.

“The main purpose of this event is to show respect for our flag, our country, our national anthem and all those who serve,” Keller said.
