Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher were honored at the 14th annual Kaneland Academic Awards and Kaneland Hall of Fame Induction on May 7.
“It’s to honor students who work hard and maintain their high grades,” Counselor Cynthia Violett said.
Students in the sophomore year or above who have a high GPA were mailed a letter from the school inviting them to participate. The letter was sent out to each student’s home to notify them and their parents of their accomplishment.
The awards night was combined with the Hall of Fame awards, and students were brought up by class and then by name. The sophomores were awarded a smaller K letter for academics, juniors were awarded a larger one and seniors were awarded a plaque. At the end of the awards night, punch and cookies were served.
Junior Aly Harner said that her parents were proud of her receiving the award.
“They like to see that I’m doing the best I can in school,” Harner said.
Individual students maintain their high GPAs in different ways.
“I make sure I stay on task and make sure I get good grades on tests,” sophomore Madison Hester said.
The academic award can also help a student applying to college, as it is something students can put on their college applications.
“The award will look good when colleges are looking at what I’m involved in,” Harner said.
Violett says that if students keep working hard on their academic grades, she hopes that these awards will inspire others to keep working hard and succeed.
