Student authors will be competing at Literary Fest, which is being held at DeKalb High School on April 27.
Most Northern Illinois high schools will have students competing in the five different categories: short story, poems, narratives, one-act plays and literary essays.
There is only one judge per category, so there is only one opinion given. But each judge has guidelines they have to follow.
Writer’s Block sponsor Kristen Johnson said that her favorite part of Literary Fest is the awards that students receive.
“[I enjoy] seeing students rewarded for academic reasons and seeing the students that like to write,” Johnson said.
Most Northern Illinois area high schools will be participating in Literary Fest. There will be workshops for each category, and they will be taught by the judge of that category.
Most of the stories submitted from Kaneland were short stories, with some descriptive pieces and some poetry, Johnson said. She said she hoped that students would return with the “satisfaction of being noticed.”
Anyone interested in joining Writer’s Block or attending Literary Fest should contact Johnson. It meets on Wednesdays after school twice a month.
