Roaring cheers greet quarterback Joe Camiliere and the varsity football team as they take the field every Friday night.
The Knights, who had a record of 4-2 as of press dead, are optimistic about their conference chances this year, head coach Tom Fedderly said.
“We feel like we’re a team that can contend for championship,” Fedderly said.
The Knights have defeated teams like Burlington, Rochelle and Sycamore so far this season. They fell, however, to Glenbard South and Huntley High School.
“We’re just going by game,” junior Joe Camiliere said.
Junior Taylor Andrews, wide receiver and cornerback, said this season is going very well.
“We’ve improved a lot from last year. Hopefully, with some big games, we can make it to the playoffs,” he said.
Usually the rivalries among WSC football teams are strong.
“We have a lot of rivals and match up to them all pretty well,” he said. “We don’t have a biggest rival.”
Outside linebacker Derek Bus and Camiliere said their biggest rival is Batavia. The Knights beat Batavia on Sept. 25 with a score of 21-17. This season, Camiliere said he is a lot more confident in his playing, and he likes figuring out what he can do. The team has been working hard to achieve goals for this season, Fedderly said. He said his goal for the season is to have a home playoff game.
“There are a few rough spots, but we practice hard every day. We try to come out and win on Friday nights,” Bus said.
The Knights’ next game is Oct. 23, when they will be away against Yorkville High School.
