Freshmen athletes step up to the plate

With a bright three years ahead of them, freshman athletes attempt to make an impact playing at the highest high school level possible, varsity .

BY MARK LILLY, Reporter

Varsity baseball head coach Brian Aversa usually doesn’t bring players up unless they are going to be an everyday starter, but in freshman Anthony Holubecki’s case, he comes up and pitches when needed, plays outfield and hits for the sophomore team.

“It is very rare for a freshman athlete to come up and play on the varsity baseball squad,” Aversa said.

Playing varsity as a freshman is not an easy goal to reach, but it is possible, and they can have an impact on their respected teams.

“What makes someone capable of playing is possessing a skill set that sets them apart from other players, and actually makes them better than others who play the same position on the varsity team,” Aversa said.

Senior Blake Sowell believes that if someone has something to offer to help the team win, there is no reason for them not to be brought up.

“He has already impacted our team so much, and we enjoy having him up with us just as much as we hope he enjoys being with us,” Sowell, who will be attending Clarke on a scholarship next year, said. “Holubecki already has the making to be a great pitcher. He just needs the fine tuning, and he’ll be a stud.”

Freshman soccer player Sage Schlehofer is a another prime example of hard work pays off, as another freshman playing up on the varsity level.

“I train every day for soccer during the school season to prepare for games,” Schlehofer said.

What she wanted to accomplish out of the season was to help the team get to regionals and be effective in helping them win, as she and her teammates work hard in practice.

“They have a bright three years in front of them, and the sky is the limit,” Sowell said.
