Girls’ track season starts with indoor meets

By Marissa Mulligan, Reporter

Track season has started and the Lady Knights hope to make it even farther than last year when they went to state. So far, they have had ____(Will fill in with stats)___.

On March 10 the teem competed in the Byron Invitational. (Will fill in stats)

(Will fill in other results from meets)
On Feb 23 the teem faced Wheaton Warrenville South.

The number of seniors on the track team is low this season, but sophomore Lauren Zick predicted that the incoming freshmen will contribute to making the team stronger this season.

The girls’ track team started their conditioning in late January and had their first indoor meet on Feb 9. The first three indoor meets are non-scoring. They use these to prepare for the more competitive meets. Girls’ track coach Doug Ecker said that the beginning of the season is all about getting in shape and injury prevention.

Senior Nicole Ketza is a thrower on the team this year and she competes in the discus and shot put events. She is ready to give it her all this season so she will “have the best senior year that I can.”

Ketza said that Kaneland is “pretty balanced in everything but our distance program has been really successful in the past.”

Last season Kaneland had six athletes from the track team go to state. Zick, graduate Andie Strang, sophomore Sydney Strang and graduate Kris Bowen took sixth in the 4×8. Graduate Brooke Patterson missed finals by half a foot__(will insert what event that was)___. Zick also took ninth in the 400m.

Ecker said it is difficult to predict which athletes will go the farthest this year.

“You never know in track til the end” Ecker said.
