It all started in the gym for senior Jess Lubic, captain of the varsity volleyball team.
Lubic started out playing for Kaneland Middle School and worked her way up to one of the most prestigious stages, Division 1 volleyball. She recently received a full ride scholarship to Northern Illinois University, to play volleyball.
“Division 1 volleyball is one of the highest levels of competition there is,” varsity volleyball coach Todd Weimer said.
Weimer is very excited because NIU is very local, so the volleyball program will be able to attend many games. Lubic will be the first Division 1 volleyball player he has coached at Kaneland.
“I really like NIU because they have a good education program. I like the coaches and the sports program atmosphere. My best friend also goes there,” Lubic said.
She is currently involved in a weight program through NIU, and she plays for the Kane County Junior Volleyball Club, where she is coached by the assistant NIU volleyball coach.
Although Lubic did receive a full ride, she is being redshirted her first year, which means she is sitting her first year of eligibility out.
“I am redshirting my freshman year and will have a full ride for the next four years,” Lubic said.
