A year after getting second in the state, the Knights’ varsity track team is getting ready for another shot at possibly doing one better.

With a lot of last year’s team graduating, the Knights are a very young team led by seniors Taylor Andrews, Tommy Whittaker, Trevor Holm and Curtis Secrest.

“Our goals this year are to make it to state like last year and do even better,” Whittaker said. “Being a young squad with only seven seniors, we need everyone to go 110% percent every time they run.”

Seniors Matt Cowans and Matt Spitzzerri are leading the jumpers this year and working to push the team forward.

“Our team last year was stacked,” Cowans said. “We had a lot of great athletes in all events. Last year I didn’t jump much because of my hamstring injury, but now I’m looking to give our team those extra points in triple and long jump.”

Junior sprinter Quinn Buschbacher said the sprinters have improved. “This year I believe we have more depth in our sprinters. I feel like we can do a lot of damage,” Buschbacher said.

With the season’s two big meets, the Kane County Meet and the Peterson Invitational, coming up, Buschbacher is hopeful.

“I know County and Peterson are two really big meets for us and I really hope we do well. We have a lot of depth. If we win, it will just make it even better,” he said.
