Reader, wake up. Look at our current society. Consider our constant technological advancements and the role of artificial intelligence in our daily lives. Wouldn’t it be great if instead of the complexities of finding a partner, or the hurt of experiencing heartbreak, we could have an AI android that was designed solely to be your partner? There would be no arguments, no difficulties or fears of losing them. The idea itself sounds desirable, sure, but considering all the details will reveal this concept to be far more dangerous than beneficial. “Companion” (2025) is a horror/science fiction film that captures the dangers of technology perfectly.
The plot can be loosely compared to “Subservience” (2024), which follows an AI android designed for housework and childcare and becomes self-aware. “Companion” follows an android that is specifically designed for romantic companionship with humans. However, when a couples’ vacation with a group of friends turns bloody, the situation becomes much more complicated.
Ultimately, the plot of “Companion” is an utterly chilling story of a reality that our current society may be approaching. The piece offers a realistic perspective of the complexities of human nature. Perhaps the most alluring concept of this film is that humans are the true villains, for it is their own greed and ignorance that pushes the technological being over the edge.
The acting in “Companion” is truly sensational. Sophie Thatcher (Iris) plays our leading lady, and she is truly born to be a star. Thatcher is excellent at playing this role of an android with AI that is designed to act as a romantic companion. She is a newer face of fame, showing more talent in every role she takes on. In this specific piece, Thatcher creates a brilliant blend of deep emotion and lack thereof, making her the perfect fit for this murderous android.
Most notably, Jack Quaid (Josh) uses dimensional acting to deliver the audience a combination of suspense and horror. Quaid was perfect for this particular role because he is one of the most believable psychopaths that cinema has encountered. “Companion” is truly one of Quaid’s best works and, despite rumors of nepotism, he is making his own name in the film industry through his abilities.
Although the actors bring these ideas to life, it is those who act behind the scenes that make films possible.
“Companion” is directed by Drew Hancock, who is an American writer and director. Hancock is commonly known for satirical work, but his work in “Companion” is far superior. The film covers a brilliant concept that urges society to reflect on its technological goals and advancements. Hancock ensures that this piece will be remembered through his interesting choices, like his unique blocking that oozes creativity. Hancock also incorporates many excellent plot twists to create nerve-wracking suspense, keeping the audience on their toes.
The directing is not the only aspect that makes this film so high quality.
Eli Born is the face behind the cinematography of “Companion.” Born is known for his works in horror/thrillers like “Super Dark Times” (2017), “Wild Indian” (2021) and “The Boogeyman” (2023), so “Companion” was right up his alley. Born used many impactful choices throughout the film, like his use of close-up shots. These shots allowed Born to bring the focus to the emotional state of each character, therefore creating a deeper connection with the audience.
The film colorization also plays a hand in the emotional appeal. Born ingeniously uses muted colors during scenes with somber and saddening atmospheres, but shocks bursts of color in scenes that are filled with joy and hope. This allows Born to guide the viewer through each emotion, allowing “Companion” to be truly impactful.
The musical score featured within “Companion” makes the film all the more captivating. The music begins with a happy and upbeat tone, growing more eerie and suspenseful with the film’s story. To start, the music is fun and playful, having a jazz-like style. Just like the unaware AI that our story follows, the score also incorporates a sense of curiosity, wonder and love.
The sweet music is occasionally even used to juxtapose danger, causing a contradicting sensation for viewers. Even when it seems as though all sense of innocence and love is lost in the film, the score still incorporates the most subtle hints of those aspects. By combining these upbeat and playful moods with the suspenseful, foreboding music, the film is able to capture the attention of the audience.
This film is one that you don’t want to miss. The emotional appeal, suspense levels and captivating qualities make this piece unforgettable. The message of this film begs to be heard, and it is so important that we listen.
