Social media affects the way families function.

Society evolves every day whether people accept or deny this conjecture. With this evolution comes the change in how a family functions.

Households are different than they used to be, and that could start with how women have a different role in today’s society compared to society 40 years ago.

According to the Women’s Bureau, women have taken huge strides in society making up 47 total percent of the work force between men and women. As the cost of living has risen in the recent decade, more women are being forced into the workforce and some even have to work separate jobs.

“I have to work three jobs to support my family,” community and health specialist Michelle Schinmann said.

Michelle is currently a mother of two children who like many mothers have to overcome financial instabilities.

With over 62 percent of families having both parents work, children are getting less exposure time with their parents. According to health expert Michelle Foster, children need to spend time with their parents in order to learn the proper values, beliefs and skills in order to be prepared for the real world.

“The problem with how a family functions today is that children are learning their values and beliefs through media sources rather than their parents. Parenting is a full time job that always needs to be taken seriously, but how can a parent provide the proper time needed to raise children if they’re never home? It’s just not possible,” Foster said.

With parents being around less time than ever before, children are beginning to learn to adapt to life on their own rather than receiving help from their parents. Since children aren’t spending time with their parents, their values and beliefs come from social media more than ever.

“My parents are never home as it is, so I’ve pretty much taught myself what I know,” Isaac Schinmann, son of Michelle Schinmann, said.
