A bright future for KHS is introduced to the school board
February 16, 2016
The Kaneland School Board met on February 8 to discuss topics including renovations for next school year. As always, the meeting started with public comments. All of the public comments were directly about clubs or issues at the high school.
At the high school, counselor Andrew Franklin and students Michael Petrik, Jake Obremski, Julia Schaefer and Kate Huber have started a new club called “Brighter Future.” They started this club in October of this school year.
The main goal of this new club is According to the Brighter Future flyer, “To have student members Educate themselves through research, attending field trips, attending guest seminars, connecting with experts in the sustainability field, connecting with experts in the Social Entrepreneurship field, and attending national conferences related to our vision statement.”
Their current project is collecting clothes to resell them in the U.S. and abroad. This also serves as a fundraiser for the club. Future projects include “Lighting Audit of High School Facility and Community Energy Sponsorship,” “Brighter Future Cell Phone AP,” selling “Brighter Future” reusable water bottles to students and staff and selling local honey to students and staff.
The money the club collects will go towards purchasing ecology friendly materials to use at the school. A larger goal, according to the Brighter Future flyer, is to “obtain a major sustainable energy source for the school property.”
The public comments also included some coaches talking about their stipends. These coaches included boys track coach Eric Baron and Susan Acksel spoke for cheer coaches Jen French and Emily Fuchs.
According to Baron, coaching positions for track are currently being looked for, but there are coaches who split a stipend who should be paid before looking for new positions. Baron thinks they should consider giving a full stipend to those who volunteer a lot of their time rather than looking for new positions to pay and looking over the coaches who have been around for numerous years.
