Jenna Hamilton is far from the cliche teen that one usually sees in MTV shows. She’s not 16 and pregnant nor on a journey to find an online lover that she’s never met.
She’s just a teenage girl whose life is riddled with awkward moments and misunderstandings.
After months of waiting for MTV’s third season of their hit show “Awkward.,” the hour-long first episode did not disappoint.
Seasons one and two of “Awkward.” had 12 episodes each; however, season three is scheduled to have a whopping, near double 20 episodes.
The first two episodes of season three were aired back to back on April 16. The first named Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes, the second Responsibility Irresponsible and the third A Little Less Conversation.
Plot twists are strewn throughout all three of these episodes, keeping the viewer from moving their eyes even an inch away from their television.
Over the summer, Jenna opted to stay home while friend Tamara and ex-lover Jake embarked on a romantic escape to Europe while Matty, Jenna’s current boyfriend, and herself stayed home for their own romantic adventures.
When school returns to being back in session, Palos Hills High School is thriving with new drama.
With the death of a character, Palos Hills High School is both distraught and liberated.
Jenna even finds that her boyfriend is cashing in on the lesson learned from the departed student, “YOLO-ing,” as the show calls it.
The show surprisingly takes the phrase “YOLO,” seriously, not using it as an excuse for drug use and excessive partying, but to actually live life to the fullest.
These first three episodes show quite a bit of character development. You can tell that each of the characters are a few months older.
Two new characters are also introduced in this new season based on fresh beginnings.
Mr. Heart, portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall (Brian from 80s film “The Breakfast Club”), is a sadistic creative writing teacher.
Ironically, his first words in the show are “Who do you think you are?” which has connections to the theme of John Hughes’ cult classic.
The second new character, Collin James is portrayed by Nolan Funk from FOX’s hit show, “Glee.” Funk’s character is a prep school transfer student who seems to be extremely confident and amazingly smart. His first scene with Jenna is in Mr. Heart’s creative writing class, which is a prestigious class for Palos Hills High due to the fact that many students drop out because of Mr. Hearts constant harassment.
Even though the wait for the third season of the show was brutal with all of MTV’s promoting, it is finally here, and it is amazing.
This show is great for any high school student who needs a character to relate to.
