This column will be done each month to help promote reading at Kaneland. Each month, I will be interviewing a different faculty member on their favorite book current and former, their view on student reading, what they are currently reading and if they would recommend it.
Everyone has their own opinion on it. Some students may think that its the most boring thing in the world, while others may love reading and do it all the time. Principal Chip Hickman believes that the reading that students have done on their own has declined over the years.
“Everything is competing with reading,” Hickman said
Students may read the books that are assigned in their English classes, but some students don’t really read for fun anymore. Many people have favorite books; some may be from their childhood, others may be ones they’ve recently read. Hickman falls in the former of the options. His all-time favorite book is Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Bloom. His favorite thing about the book is the character and the trials and tribulations that he goes through.
“It’s the finest book I’ve ever read and the first author that I ever liked,” Hickman said
As an adult, Hickman likes Good to Great by Jim Collins. This book is a ten year study about how companies go from good to great and discusses ways to help your company/organization get better.
Hickman is currently reading Great by Choice by Jim Collins, a companion novel to Good to Great. This book helps to understand what really makes a good leader. It helps people understand how to inspire others and what the characteristics are that do actually make a good leader for any type of company. He recommends this book to student organizations since reading this book can help them grow and get better.
