It’s a fact: many girls wear makeup or use some sort of cosmetic products. It’s almost instinctive to this generation. Being such a habit, most of us don’t even think twice about it, but maybe we should start.
Here’s the real question: do people wonder or care about what is in cosmetics? A few? The harsh truth is that we all need to start paying a little more attention to it because now our health is at stake.
To think that the products we wonder little to nothing of could actually be harming us without even realizing it is strange. Shockingly, some of the biggest name brands in cosmetics have been proven guilty of hiding toxins in their products.
Both Maybelline and L’Oreal lipsticks were shown to contain a much higher level of lead than what is considered “alright” to consume.
Revlon, CoverGirl, Almay and Neutrogena have been caught with countless toxins in their skin products. Revlon’s ColorStay blush has been given a 10 out of 10 in hazard concerns. This is due to the fact that it contains Methylparaben, a chemical that is easily absorbed through the skin. Methylparaben has been proven to cause endocrine reactions, allergies and cancer.
Makeup is not the only hazard. Our hair care products are also infected with toxins. Approximately 90 percent of all commercial shampoos contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS). SLS has been showing results of damaging protein growth formation in the eyes according to the Watchdog Environment Working Group. This has been raising concerns about possible long-term effects such as blindness or other tissue malfunctions.
L’Oreal hair dyes have also been given a 10 out of 10 for containing multiple carcinogens (cancer-causing ingredients) such as Methylparaben, propylene glycol and coal tar.
These are only a few of the dangerous substances in makeup. According to the Watchdog Environment Working Group, about 89 percent of the 10,500 ingredients in makeup have not been tested by the FDA.
This is turning into a big problem, and deserves to be looked further into.
