Fall basketball conditioning on a roll
As fall sports roll through the season, there are the student-athletes that take the fall season off from school sports and prepare for their respective winter sports. Varsity basketball coach Brian Johnson runs a conditioning program for those athletes who want to play basketball in the winter. This goes on after school from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“This is just for those athletes that don’t play in a fall sport for them to get conditioned for the season. This allows us coaches to not run them so much during practice in the season,” Johnson said.
The athletes go through a rigorous weightlifting and conditioning program to get them in better shape. In addition, players scrimmage each other competitively in a basketball game using the Kaneland Basketball offense and concepts.
Sophomore Dylan Vaca takes advantage of this opportunity and puts it to use.Vaca is playing for varsity this year as a shooting guard.
“Weight lifting and conditioning in the offseason increases your stamina; you become well conditioned, and it makes playing easier for when the season starts,” Vaca said.
Vaca also said that it can help the team get a head start on their opponents since he and his teammates are already in great shape and athletic at the start of the season.
“This allows us to concentrate on the season and the basketball related drills we do. By the time the season starts, we are focused,” Johnson said.
The scrimmages get very competitive as the players showcase their skills. A competitive atmosphere can help increase a player’s performance, according to Vaca
“Ben Barnes and Ryan David really push me because they were on the team last year and want to get better just like I do,” Vaca said.
