Final installment of Age of Fire series a satisfying conclusion

“Dragon Fate,” the sixth book in E.E. Knight’s popular series, was a satisfying conclusion to the story of three dragon siblings who struggled to survive in a world of humans. This book takes an interesting twist on everyday fantasy novels by telling this story in the point of view of dragons and making them the heroes.

In books previous to this one, the three dragons–the enigmatic AuRon, the brave Wistala and the outcast RuGaard–each took a separate path that eventually led them back together in time for war against humans. Victorious, the dragons establish a new empire with RuGaard at its head. But there are still conflicting beliefs between the siblings and when betrayal comes in the form of RuGaard’s old comrade NiVom, and the siblings are exiled from the dragon empire.

In this final book, it is revealed that the dragon empire is falling apart at the seams and the siblings are asked by an old friend to return and help stop NiVom and his mate Imfamnia.

Though AuRon would rather take his mate and flee to where the dragon empire will not find them, Wistala wants to help her former comrades and RuGaard goes on what seems like a suicide mission into the heart of the empire to rescue his mate who NiVom is keeping hostage.

Knight’s writing is above average in terms of fantasy novels and he has created an entire new world from a whole new perspective. He writes the age-old battle of good versus evil through the eyes of dragons in a believable way.

While dragons are popular fare–perhaps overly so–in fantasy stories and appeal to a narrow-but-dedicated fanbase, this series stands out against other books starring dragons such as the “Eragon” series by Christopher Paolini and the “Dragon Riders of Pern” by Anne McCafferty because although dragons play major roles in these books, the “Age of Fire” series gives us a draconic view of the world in a story told by the dragons themselves.
