Students have multiple opportunities over the next few years to travel abroad, with planned trips all across Europe as well as the eastern United States.

This coming spring break, about 25 students are traveling to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, London and England in a trip that will focus on media and literature.

The chaperones for this trip are English teachers Nicole Madison, Kristen Johnson and Jennifer Sayasane.

“[We will be traveling to] London because it is the basis of most of literature that our students read and learn about on a daily basis here at school; it will be great for our students to see it in the real world,” Johnson said.

While in Amsterdam, students will visit the house where Anne Frank hid during the persecution of Jews during World War II.  Students will also experience the extensive local canal system and try various native cuisines such as potato fries accompanied with mayonnaise.

When the students visit England, they will have the ultimate tourist experience.

They will be visiting places such as the London theater district and the famous “tube” that runs underneath the city. Students will also visit Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

They will visit his childhood home as well as a reconstruction of the Globe Theater. Another famous landmark the students will visit is Stonehenge, as well as the city of Oxford.

The trip, originally planned by former teacher Cheryl Borrowdale, is now helmed by English teacher Nicole Madison.

Several more trips are planned to take place in the next few years.

During the Spring break of 2014, seasoned traveler Michelle Jurcenko is taking students to Italy and Spain.  This is a foreign language trip and is ideal for aspiring French and Spanish speakers where they can put into practice the language skills learned in the classroom.

“We have 45 students signed up, and one open spot left,” Jurcenko said.

Students will be visiting places such as Vatican City, Rome and Barcelona.

“Italy is always extremely fascinating,” Jurcenko said.

Jurcenko said that Barcelona is on the agenda again because it was a big hit last year.

The first meeting for Jurcenko’s 2014 trip took place March 12.  There will be more meetings during next school year.

History teacher Javier Martinez is planning a trip to France, Germany and Belgium to visit places such as the beaches of Normandy and where the D-Day invasion was held.

In previous years, Martinez has taken Kaneland students to Virginia.

“Kids who went to Virginia, which was mostly Civil War sites, asked to go to Europe,” Martinez said.

This trip will take place in June of 2014.  In 2015, Martinez plans on making another trip out to Virginia; if there is still interest in going to Europe again, there is hope for another historical war-based Europe trip in years to come.
