It is in every high school. It is as American as apple pie. It is the high school rock band. Over 50 years, bands with the name of Pun Devils to the Farmers have roamed the halls of Kaneland. In the year 2013, there is the band Atmospheric Iridescence. This band has a lot of talent, so I decided to sit down with Eric Meuer from Atmospheric Iridescence and discuss his view on their music and where they want to take it.
Q. What instrument do you play and how did you start playing it?
A. My main instrument is guitar, but from there, I have branched off and taught myself other stringed instruments such as ukulele, mandolin etc. I have also have picked up on playing the piano and organ. I started [playing] about three years ago and did it because honestly I had nothing better to do.
Q. What is your favorite song to play and who is in your band?
A. Our favorite song to play is an original entitled Bill Cosby and the Sweater People. Give mad props to the person who thought of that title, which was Daniel Baldoneri. Our members our myself, Dylan McCoullogh and Jack Van Gemert.
Q. What bands or artists influenced you?
A. A lot of old stuff like Ragtime. There are so many bands that influenced me; the list would be infinite.
Q. What are your plans for music after high school?
A. I will be studying music therapy at the University of Evansville in Indiana.
Q. What is your ultimate goal as a musician?
A. I want to make people dance, smile, to share music with people and to help those who need help with music.
Q. Do you play publicly anywhere?
A. Yes, we’ve played at the Art Spot in Wheaton, the Legion Hall in Sugar Grove and the X-hibit in Elburn.
I also interviewed guitar-player Cristian Guzman. He is enthusiastic about his music and is beginning to appear publicly.
Q. What instrument do you play and how did you start playing it?
A. The instrument I play currently is a seven-string Schecter guitar. I began playing since seventh grade and have been in love ever since!
Q. What is your favorite song to play and who is in your band?
A. Currently, I am not in a band, but that is definitely something I am looking forward to getting into. Also I love to come up with very technical metal riffs for I am quite the metal head. I’d have to say my favorite song to play would be whatever I come up with when I sit down. I don’t think I’ve ever covered a single song from any other band.
Q. What bands or artists influenced you?
A. The band that influenced me a lot was Suffocation. Their style was very unique. The uniqueness in music grasps my attention a lot.
Q. What are your plans for music after high school?
A. After high school, I would love to attend a good decent school with a good program having to do with theater and music.
Q. What is your ultimate goal as a musician?
A. My ultimate goal that I someday will do my absolute best is to have something I have written in a movie or video game. I would live happy knowing that other person likes my music.
Q. Do you play publicly anywhere?
A. I don’t really play publicly but more for my friends. This actually will be my first year playing in public I am quite excited. Everyday I’m trying my best to blow your guys’ minds when that day arrives!
