Ermahgerd, memes are on the rise.
Whether memes are used to troll, or aggravate people in a clever manner, make people laugh or to give audiences a new perspective on events, they are source of entertainment for those browsing the Internet.
“[They are funny] because they have a sense of humor we have experienced,” junior Eric Przybylski said.
There are several different types of memes displayed on Facebook through pages and postings by users who find them to be hilarious. Some of the most popular memes pages are sports-related memes.
Other memes that just surface on the “Interwebz” can just be on general topics involving politics, issues and scenarios.
Many of the popular memes are Bad Luck Brian, a high school student who always seems to face unfortunate adversity, Condescending Wonka, a sarcastic-looking Willy Wonka, the “Ermahgerd lady,” a lady thinking aloud with terrible English or the “most interesting man in the world,” a man from the Dos Equis beer commercials that doesn’t always do something, but when he does, he prefers to do something (usually creative).
“My favorite memes are either Bad Luck Brian or [the MLB Memes page],” senior Josh Cohrs said.
However, memes can cross the line. Not all involve clean and ethical humor. If there is a major issue or event past or present, some may cross the line and become insensitive or not timed very well. When looking at memes, some people don’t think that their jokes are “too soon” but that “too soon” is “never soon enough.”
“They are a way to make fun of certain people or situations without being hurtful due to their joking nature,” senior Jake Parry said.
Most are very witty. All have quick punch lines. One does not simply look at one meme and that’s it. People will often find themselves looking through several memes and will continue to do so as long as they are produced.
