Music festivals are defined as a large, multi-day event where many bands and musicians perform. Illinois offers a variety of music festivals over summer vacation.

Spring Awakening Music Festival happened the weekend of June 13. Senior Gina Pettenon attended this music festival and enjoyed her experience there.

“I went to Spring Awakening because I like the music and dancing, along with the environment,” Pettenon said.

Spring Awakening Music Festival took place at Soldier Field in Chicago. Performers included Tiesto, Knife Party, Flux Pavilion and Dillon Francis. This specific music festival focuses on electronic dance music.

Another music festival, Pitchfork Music Festival, takes place July 18-July 20 at Union Park, Chicago. The cost is $60 per day and $120 for a three-day pass. This music festival features up and coming artists. This year’s performers include Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar and Pusha T.

In addition to those music festivals, Chicago hosts Lollapalooza every year. Lollapalooza occurs August 1-August 3 in Grant Park. It cost $100 per day and $250 for a three-day pass.

Junior Mitchel Groen plans on going to Lollapalooza on the first day.

“I’ve never been to a music festival, but I’m looking forward to spending the day with my friends and listening to good music,” Groen said.

Hosting more than 160,000 people over a three-day period, Lollapalooza features hip hop, alternative rock and dance music.

This year’s performers include Eminem, Skrillex and Arctic Monkeys.

Along with Groen, junior Andy Delgado plans on going that Friday.

“I’m most excited to see Eminem,” Delgado said.

Lastly, North Coast Music Festival is an event that occurs August 29-August 31 at Union Park, Chicago. It cost $149 plus fees for a general three-day admission and $279 plus fees for a three-day V.I.P. admission.

Pettenon is also going to Lollapalooza and North Coast.

“My favorite part of a music festival is the carefree and positive environment it offers people,” Pettenon said.

Summer music festivals provide people with an unforgettable experience while watching all their favorites perform live. Further information can be found on each music festival’s official site.
