The Lacrosse Kid

Lacrosse isn’t a common sport, and not many people at Kaneland High School play it. Chances are many students may not even see it on TV or hear about it on the web. Inspite of this, love for the game of lacrosse still beats in the heart of freshman Jacob Sussland. He’s been playing for an impressive nine years.

“Since I was five or six I have had a lacrosse stick my hands,”said Jacob.

Jacob wasn’t sure what sport to play early on his life; but  he was just sitting around watching TV, and it came to him Lacrosse was the sport he had to play.

“I was just watching highlights of lacrosse on sportscenter one day and just had to get involved”, Sussland said.

Each year his passion for the game increases. Lacrosse is not exactly like most team sports. ln basketball, and in some cases football,  one player can completely take over a game and dominate on his own. A big reason Jacob enjoys playing the game is the need for communication and teamwork to score points, stop teams from scoring and win games.

“Teamwork and communication is a really big part of Lacrosse there are no individuals it takes a team to win,” Sussland said.

Practice makes perfect with anything you want to accomplish and so Sussland and his travel team practice at least three times collectively sharpening their skills. Once a week by himself he dedicates himself to his craft for a couple of hours.

Weekends usually consist of games or tournaments. His most memorable moment in lacrosse was place first in his debut with River City lacrosse in his first big lacrosse tournament in Wisconsin “The Brewtown Showdown.”

In the future, Jacob hopes to play Lacrosse at the collegiate level but for now he is going to attempt to play lacrosse at Oswego High School.

He plays attacker which is equivalent to a small forward in basketball, the primary scoring option. His favorite player Brendan Mundorf is an attacker for the Denver Outlaws.

“I love watching him play, he does things on the field that nobody else does.”Sussland said
