On Monday January 25, the Kaneland school board met up to discuss the annual financial analysis, as well as an overviewing of the new middle school coursebook.

Mike Francis from Forecast 5 explained that the financial analysis document is one that always comes with changes.

“It’s a living, breathing document that’s constantly changing,” Francis said.

Kaneland’s operating budget is around 55 million, in which about 73 percent comes from property taxes. From the presentation, it was learned that Kaneland is projected to lose about one million dollars a year up to 2021.

“The deficit is expected to grow larger,” Francis said.

Francis informed the board members that their continuous planning will help, and they will work to make sure that the school district will eventually make a profit.

After the presentation, the changes to the middle school coursebook were overviewed. The combining of communication skills and literature classes to make one 90 minute class was discussed.

“The gain is integrating the two together, they naturally go together,” Mike Purcell said.

Purcell also discussed the removal of the eighth grade enriched science class and moving into more lab based curriculum. The changes are part of the overall goal to prepare students for high school and eventually college.
