December 12, 2016 board meeting
January 4, 2017
The Board of Education met on December 12 to discuss topics including scheduling for the 2017-2018 year and budgets. The meeting started with Athletic Director Peter Goff going through all the fall sports and giving a summary on how each sport did. He also recognized a couple of athletes that were at the meeting for their fall sport.
Next on the agenda, the board discussed the 2017-2018 school year calendar. The plan is to have four weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter break.
They’re also looking to begin finals before winter break. This would benefits students because it can be hard to have a two week break then have to come back to school to take finals.
This would not change when the semester ends however, having finals before break would allow classes to do a final project during the couple weeks that they have after break.
Next year administration would like to have a pilot year where they give teachers the opportunity to give finals before break. Although it will require additional planning in the future, it gives teacher the chance to see what best fits their lesson plans.
For semester classes it would be slightly more difficult to find a spot where it would naturally end and take the final.
With the possible changes following the next couple years, it left some board members such as Ryan Kerry wondering whether it would affect the start and end days for the school years. With finals being a stressful and busy time it would take time and careful consideration on what affects it would have on the school calendar.
