Fire science instructor charged with sexual assault

Thursday, February 5, Kaneland High School employee Glen Baum was arrested and charged with nine counts of criminal sexual assault and two counts of child pornography following an investigation that revealed he was having a sexual relationship with one of his students.

A firefighting instructor, Baum, 42, is accused of maintaining a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student between May and January. Baum taught a course through Kaneland’s Fox Valley Career Center, which provides career training for seven high schools in the Kane Country area.

According to a press release posted by Kaneland officials, they became aware of the relationship on January 12, and Baum’s contract was terminated on January 14, 2015.

Kaneland School District 302 and Fox Valley Career Center officials have cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office throughout the criminal proceedings,

The situation reportedly came to light after the 17-year-old girl’s mother saw inappropriate texts from Baum and immediately notified authorities.

Baum was held on a $250,000 bail, under specific conditions including no contact with anyone under 18.

Baum is next scheduled to be in court on February 11, 2015.
