Horticulture department fundraiser sale

Every year, the Kaneland High School’s Horticulture Department holds a plant sale just in time for Mother’s Day to raise money for the agriculture program.

The plant sale’s funds help pay for the school’s greenery and support materials for the those taking any horticulture class.

“We make a profit, but that profit gets turned into buying more supplies,” Laura Widhalm, the Horticulture teacher said.

The funds raised help out with District 302’s greenery, as well as enhancing the learning experience of students.

Students choose and research a plant they’d like to grow. They  plant it  in the greenhouse at the correct time of year, and take care of it throughout the growing process.

Along with horticulture, the art club and welding class help out by creating nature-inspired art for sale, such as birdhouses and clay flower pots.

The money raised through their work returns to the department of the artist.

Prices range from $1 to $20 for flowers such as geraniums, petunias, marigolds and even vegatables like tomatoes and peppers. The sale is Thursday, May 8 after school and Friday, May 9.
