A new year, new season and new families, everyone springs into support and shows care for those around them. Head varsity softball coach, Brian Willis, has been battling cancer for the past few months.

Students and staff dug down deep into closets and wore those lucky team jerseys. Thursday the 17th of April, Kaneland High School wore sports jerseys to show their support for him and his fight against cancer.

“I started jersey Thursday many years ago with Linda Kalley, because we wanted to do something fun for the whole building to do together,” said Willis.

Willis being the head coach for Girls KHS Varsity Softball and leader for P.E. Leadership he always has his hands full. Having cancer and being “on the go” daily can be hard work. Having support from just one person can be the difference in one’s mood or attitude.

“When I found out about Kaneland High School is supporting me this week by wearing sports jerseys, I simply had no words. Everyone has been great while I’ve been going through this tough time and everyone showing their support makes me feel blessed and thankful,” Willis said.

Also,Thursday, KHS showed the movie Frozen. The movie was open to the community with free admission. Money was raised by selling concessions, which were generously donated by staff and students.

“We went to see Frozen with our P.E. Leadership class and Willis loved it. He even got a stuffed animal Olaf (one of the main characters in the movie). Sometimes he will bring Olaf with him when he gets chemo done,” junior, Shannon Herra said.

All the proceeds from “Support Week” will be raised and distributed to the families in need, here at KHS.

“The Mr. Kaneland money originally was raised and went to Delnor, but since we have so many people in need this year we are keeping it to support those who need it,” said Teaching and Learning coach, Lori Grant.
