Kindness Moves to Social Media

Social media has been a great way to help teenagers express their inner self and be able to speak their mind publically. It has been very positive for teenagers, but also negative. When Kaneland High School challenged their students to go out of their way to do something nice for kindness week, they were encouraged to bring their kindness to social media.

As most students social media of choice is Twitter and Facebook, there are many positive and negative posts and comments on these websites. For Kindness Week many students listened to the school and posted very nice things about the week so far. Sophomore Noah Jones made a status on Facebook saying, “Let’s go Knights, let’s beat Sycamore tomorrow!!”

Being positive during Kindness Week is what Kaneland’s message was to their students. Many students have gone out of their way this week to help others and treat them with the respect they deserve. Hallie Miles was a student who brought her kindness to Twitter when she commented on the kindness sponsored volleyball game. “Great job tonight girls volleyball! #kanelandpride #kindness.”

Not everything has been a reflection of Kaneland’s kindness message though. With the new social media site Ask.fm getting more popular, people are able to ask anonymous questions that neither the site nor student can control.

Even though social media is meant for the expression and freedom of people, many hate messages are often asked to students. Kaneland sophomore Maggie Bend is very familiar with these questions when she was asked a question stating “You’re so ugly I can’t stand it!”

These types of comments is why students were challenged to say something nice to someone. When the week is finished up, hopefully all students will be able to say they have done something nice for their fellow Knight.
