Madrigals at Milliken University

Harmonies filled Millikin University on Sept. 23-24, as a musical group that included Kaneland Madrigal students used their vocal abilities to the fullest.
“The were three directors there who helped us and really pushed us. We worked constantly and they taught us good techniques,” senior Kathryn Lanute said.
Students came together from as far as Wisconsin and Indiana to learn songs and have a concert. “Heilig Holy,” an audition song for the IMEA all state choir, seemed to be a favorite.
“I like ‘Heilig Holy.’ It’s in an eight-part split for the majority of the song, and it’s really pretty,” junior Tucker DeBolt said.
“Homeland” was another song, along with “Lift your voice;” “Showdown,” which was sung by an all-male choir; and “Go Down Moses,” which was sung by an all-female choir.
After the two days were over, the Madrigals who had participated came back with new ways to sing. Students got insight into different vocal techniques, Brian Kunstman, choir director, said. DeBolt agrees on the new experience.
“It helped to be directed by someone different than Mr. Kunstman. It was cool getting a different perspective on singing techniques and the musicality of the songs,” Debolt said.
