Parent teacher conferences give parents the chance to take control of their child’s education

With November right around the corner parent teacher conferences are going to take place Wednesday, November 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m and Thursday, November 3 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. (On Wednesday there is a full day of school and on Thursday there is no school) and are held in the library.

Each conference lasts about 20 minutes, if time is a concern parents can request a meeting for another day.

No two conferences are the same because parents set the agenda. They should come with specific questions or concerns. Some families meet with just the student’s counselor. Others meet with only one teacher, some of the teachers or all of the teachers.

“Parents can expect anything they ask,” assistant principal, Diane McFarlin said.

If the student is struggling, parents and teachers can discuss how to help them with their current classes, and how to set their upcoming schedules. Parents will also receive positive feedback and constructive criticism to help further their student’s education.

“We believe strongly in eyeball to eyeball partnering for their kids education,” McFarlin said.

Students are welcome to come as well, it’s an opportunity to voice how they would like to be supported. Students were also given reflection sheets to review their goals for this year’s classes to assist the parent during the conference. Reflection sheets allow the student to set goals for current classes and the future.

“It’s another opportunity to know their students as learners,” McFarlin said.

The goal is for parents to leave feeling supported and hopeful and come away knowing more about the teachers.
