As people grow up they are presented with rites of passage, and with certain rites of passage come special privileges. At the age of fifteen a student driver can get their learners permit and typically a year later they can get their license.
The perks belonging to that step in life include some freedoms, whether it is getting a job or the ability to see friends more often. An extremely important rite of passage in the life of a high schooler is taking the ACT.
The ACT is important because it not only gives colleges a good idea of where a student will fit in at their campus but it also allows the possibility of scholarships.
This year at Kaneland high school there have been some privileges given to the students, such as the looser cell phone policy and the ability to now access youtube while at school.
The class of 2013 remembers that last year before taking the ACT our Principal Chip Hickman offered the current senior class special privileges for meeting or surpassing his expectations for the ACT.
Contrary to popular belief Mr. Hickman has been waiting for the senior class to step up and take the initiatives on what they want.
“You guys did something no one else did, and I don’t understand the lack of excitement coming from the senior class,” Hickman said. “I don’t know what the need and interests of students are whether it’s more dances or more of a choice of lunch items.”
Mr. Hickman is looking for students with ideas, anything that could make the class of 2013 senior year exciting.
“We worked for exciting list internally but need the input of the students.” Hickman said.
A poll was given to the senior class to see what special privileges were wanted as a class, there was ideas from a winter formal to an ice cream party and everything in between.
The most common answer among the polls received was the open campus during lunch, but due to legal reasons and for the safety of the students themselves that is not a legitimate request.
Another common thought among the senior class is that the class of 2013 shouldn’t have to take 2nd semester finals, like the seniors of the past. Along with this seniors should get out two weeks earlier than the other students, almost as a farewell present to the class of ‘13.
Following this trend of leaving school earlier also comes with the trend of coming in late. Some students think that study hall should not be mandatory if at the beginning or end of the day, which could lead to late arrival or early dismissal. Some students just want Smart Start everyday, and others just don’t want to have required STEP.
Some seniors don’t want to come in at all on the ACT testing day(s) or any of the required testing days for any of the students. Some just want a senior skip day that doesn’t affect your attendance.
No matter which way people look at it there are going to be seniors skeptical of the payout, and others disappointed with what they may or may not get.
The first step would be letting the administration know that the class of 2013 won’t just sit by and watch as the administration disregards for the eldest students of the year.
“Seniors need to have the most enjoyable senior year possible,” Hickman said.
